Sir Stanley Matthews First Contract Sells

Sir Stanley Matthews Contract

Stanley Matthews first ever signed contract fetched £4,100 at an auction of sporting memorabilia at Etwall in Derbyshire.

The contract, which showed Sir Stan starting on a weekly wage of £5 a week with Stoke City in 1932, would be worth the equivalent of about £320 a week today.

It was expected to sell for between £1,000 and £1,500 but frantic bidding via internet, phone and in the auction room pushed the price way above. In the end it was sold to an internet bidder.

A second contract signed by Sir Stan in 1935 was sold for £3,100.
