Matthews FC. The team built with a smile
The aim of the Sir Stanley Matthews Foundation is to provide grass roots coaching for anyone who wants to take part in sport, including disabled and special needs children and anyone less fortunate.
And the coaching is completely free – it won’t cost you a penny.
The Foundation decided to take coaching to the next level by forming Matthews FC in order to provide grass roots football for all and to allow children, who might not otherwise have had the chance, the experience of playing in a team.
The Matthews FC ethos is to follow the principles of the late Sir Stanley Matthews with the team being built on respect for all; equal opportunity for all; and, most importantly, to participate in sport with a smile.
Coach Mark Woolley explains: “At such a young age all our players want to do is enjoy the game – leaving each match in a happy frame of mind and looking forward to the next match. The emphasis is on enjoyment not the result.”
The Foundation provides free coaching for children under the age of 9 at the OSSM Academy in Blurton on Wednesday evenings for an hour from 5pm.
Our coaching staff boasts one EUFA B licensed coach, two FA Level 2 coaches and two FA Level 1 coaches.
