Sir Stanley Matthews

Local writer Roger Horwood was always just a face in the crowd at football matches. But his memories spanning seven decades of watching Stoke City have now been made into a book.

From his first match – to watch Stanley Matthews play for the Potters – through to the present day, Roger, who is 76 and lives in Barton under Needwood, writes about a host of Stoke greats and notable matches.

The book, Just A Face In The Crowd, has been launched by Potteries’ publisher Cox Bank Publishing and is priced at £7.95 with half the proceeds going to the Sir Stanley Matthews Coaching Foundation for whom Roger is an ambassador.

The book was launched at the Bet365 Stadium with former Stoke City greats Denis Smith, Terry Conroy and John Ruggiero in attendance along with Sir Stanley Matthews’ daughter and Foundation patron Jean Gough and chairman Nigel Johnson.

The book’s cover features specially commission artwork by Gaz Williams of Foley Creative and features many of the players mentioned in the book, along with the author.
